Oak Ridge, TN
Median home price: $102,950
Median family income (per year): $72,770

The town has weathered the economic storm thanks to a strong base of professional jobs in health care at local hospitals, and technical and research jobs at a range of plants. Furthermore, Oak Ridge is a short drive from Knoxville, making it a nice spot for commuters who work in the city but want to live in a quieter community.

There is not much of a downtown scene in Oak Ridge, so residents usually head to Knoxville for big shopping trips or entertainment. The surrounding region also provides a lot of outdoor activities. Oak Ridge is less than an hour from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, 30 miles south of Big South Fork National Recreation Area and 60 miles north of the Ocoee River which has world-class white-water rafting.--C.C.
