Much of Birmingham's status as an upscale Midwest city is tied to three things: cars, golf and top-rated public schools. Located in Oakland County, one of the richest in the country, the city became a nesting ground for Detroit business owners and auto industry executives.

Exclusive golf courses sprang up to cater to this growing moneyed white-collar community which also hosts the annual world famous Woodward Dream Cruise in which more than 30,000 muscle cars, street rods, custom and collector cars parade down Woodward Avenue.

More recently, the recession and auto industry woes have hurt Birmingham, forcing some of its residents to put their multi-million dollar homes on the market. But locals say its residents' strong entrepreneurial spirit will see it through its challenges.
