Description: Americans "discovered" this Pacific Ocean paradise in the 1950s, it wasn't until the 1960s that development really took off. Americans' attention was captured In 1963 when filming began on Tennessee Williams' "Night of the Iguana," an Elizabeth Taylor/Richard Burton opus directed by John Huston.
Tourism is now Puerto Vallarta's main industry, though the town has sustained a friendly atmosphere despite explosive growth. There are now nearly a quarter million residents in the municipality.
