The apparel manufacturer has turned its attention to opening self-branded retail stores, adding 4,400 new employees last year. In 2010, Levi Strauss opened 56 new company-operated stores, roughly 20 each in the U.S., Europe and Asia. It also acquired 73 Levi's and Dockers outlet stores in the U.S.

"We believe that dedicated full-price and outlet stores offer an attractive opportunity to increase sales as well as showcase the full breadth of our product offerings," says a spokesperson. The company currently employs 6,700 people in its retail business.
