Medco Health Solutions
Rank: 36 (Previous rank: 34)
CEO: George Paz

The pharmacy benefits manager had a strong year in 2011, largely due to the coming to market of generic versions of popular brand-name drugs, including Lipitor. Generics have become a big source of sales for the company's mail-order prescription service. In the fourth quarter alone, Medco saw a 15% increase from the previous quarter in mail orders for generic drugs, reaching a record $20.1 million in sales.

In July, Express Scripts Inc. announced its plans to acquire the company for $29.1 billion, prompting concern from several industry players who see the move as a major threat tocompetition. The merger was finalized in early April this year.
