Why it's admired
If there's any swagger left on Wall St., J.P. Morgan has it. Widely hailed as a remarkable survivor of the financial crisis, CEO Jamie Dimon is perhaps the most admired man in finance, mostly for dodging the subprime bullet. And despite taking billions of dollars in TARP funds, the now-second largest bank is relatively strong after buying Bear Stearns and Washington Mutual at firesale prices. But success in finance recently is defined more by surviving than thriving. Substantial writedowns from mortgages and leveraged loans led 2008 income to fall 64% to $5.6 billion, and its quarterly dividend was cut 87% to 5 cents a share. -L.D.
