The No. 3 wholesale drug distributor had a tough year in 2008, in a business with razor-thin profit margins. While AmerisourceBergen's sales were up 6.5%, net income sank by almost 6%.

The recession is putting pressure on everything, even prescription drug sales. And unlike competitors such as McKesson, AmerisourceBergen has divested itself of everything outside of its core drug-distribution business. It's a bet that will pay off if prescription writing picks up. But if it doesn't, either because of recession or healthcare changes coming from the White House, AmerisourceBergen's business could limp along with meager growth rates. - M.C.
